Rouge, With Reservations
Our Sephora Spring Sale picks — we shop it, we love it, we have complaints. This year we brought the team.
There is something that happens when you realize you have hit Rouge status at Sephora. It is not a single purchase or a celebration. It is more of a gradual recognition that you have been spending seriously on beauty for a while and that you have earned something. It felt special when it happened. It still does…a little.
The Spring Savings Event runs from April 10 through April 20, with code SPRINGSALE, and as Rouge members, we get 20 percent off sitewide. That translates to real money on products we already planned to replenish and try.
But we would be doing you a disservice if we did not tell you the full picture. Sephora’s own community forums and Reddit threads are full of longtime Rouge members questioning whether the status still carries the weight it once did. Free makeovers were eroded from unlimited to a voucher system in 2019 and then discontinued entirely going into 2020, with no proactive announcement. Members found out by trying to book. We used that service before dates and events, and we are still a little bitter about losing it! The rewards catalog barely rotates. High-value drops sell out before most members can access them. Brands like Tatcha and Sulwhasoo are both more generous to loyal customers on their own sites than Sephora is at the Rouge level. The return policy has tightened considerably, too — what once felt like an open-door policy is now a strict 30-day cutoff with no grace period, effective April 2025.
We also shop Blue Mercury, Violet Grey, and Dermstore, and each one tells you something about the customer a retailer actually had in mind when they built their floor. Sephora has been doing that work lately, and we noticed. Brand access has genuinely improved: Violette_FR Boum Boum Milk used to mean an order from Oh My Cream in France, Davines required a salon visit, and Beauty of Joseon was a Mott Street find before it landed at Sephora. That kind of niche access matters to us.
Some of our favorite brands arrived, scaled up, and quietly changed. Kosas rebranded entirely by 2023 to chase a younger customer: the Crème Blush Highlighter Duo…gone, the Tinted Face Oil…gone, the original Rosewater lipstick—replaced. AmorePacific pulled back from the US market altogether. RMS left by 2022 and eventually found its way to the Orange Store. Bite Beauty just disappeared. Sephora exited the supplement category entirely in 2025, taking Hum Nutrition with it, a brand that had been there since 2014. And OCC, sigh, one of the original vegan indie brands and the home of the cult Lip Tar, had a legal dispute with Sephora over a canceled order in 2015 and never recovered, closing for good in 2018. The Sephora community has been running threads mourning departed brands for years.
The Gen Alpha effect has been real to witness, and we are not hating on it. We are women with specific needs, and we notice when a store stops feeling like it was built for us. Marisa Meltzer captured it perfectly in her Soft Power Substack after attending SEPHORiA in LA this March, two women in their 40s in a crowd that skewed firmly post-Y2K. Worth a read.
We are not alone in that. The Business of Fashion recently noted that Gen X accounts for 28 percent of US beauty purchasing and that Bluemercury has had 20 consecutive quarters of growth largely by paying attention to the 40-plus consumer. Sephora has been slower to that math, though the brands coming in suggest movement in the right direction.
All of that said, convenience is nothing. Sephora is everywhere, and there are worse problems than being able to DoorDash a Beautyblender at 7 AM. When the experience is good, it is genuinely good. We are shopping the sale! Here is what made the cart!
A Note: this issue, we had some help. Joining Jamie and Michelle are three Gingergeist VIBs — Very Important Beauty Insiders. Gabrielle, our marketing and social director, brings the Gen Z point of view we rely on. Brittany, our Art Director, is the eye behind everything you see at Gingergeist. And Ariana, Jamie's daughter, has been keeping us informed about what is actually happening in beauty since she was a teenager. Consider this the most crowded cart we have ever published, and we are not mad about it.

I shop this sale almost entirely online and treat it as a restock run. But I have learned to leave a little room for discovery. I popped into my local Sephora and, for the first time in a long time, felt a little uneasy. The floor had shifted. Armani, YSL, Estée Lauder, NARS, and Dior pushed to the back. The irony is not lost on me. I finally have the disposable income, and the store has been reorganized around someone else.
Beautyblender Pro is a forever restock. I put away my brushes a long time ago and never looked back. I buy multiples at a time because I go through them fast, and I refuse to use a dirty one. Yes, it is wasteful. No, I am not stopping.
Shiseido Super-Soft Natural Facial Cotton is one of those products that has better alternatives on paper, and I buy it anyway. I have used it for cleansing and toner applications for years. It is the OG, and I am not switching. The texture that makes my entire skincare routine feel more elevated. Mine sit in a repurposed black candle container on my vanity, which tells you everything you need to know about how I feel about them.
Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Setting Spray is a daily staple. Every morning, the last step, without fail. My makeup artist used it at my wedding, and that was it for me. I have not reached for anything else since.
Kérastase Elixir Ultime Hair Oil Duo cycles in and out of my routine, and the reason is always the same. The first time I used it, people stopped me to say my hair was shimmering. That memory alone keeps me coming back. I am grabbing the duo because it comes with a mini, and I am firmly of the opinion that not enough good styling products exist in travel sizes. My hair routine does not take a vacation just because I do.
Moroccanoil Hydrating Styling Cream, large size, x2—for my husband. I stock up when the sale runs. He loves it, it works, and Sephora is one of the better places to find it reliably. Nothing for my son yet, but one day.
Dior Dreamskin Care and Perfect is a continuous restock, and the product I am most loyal to in this entire cart. I keep a full-size and a travel-size at all times. On days I want a full face, it works as a filter and primer underneath everything. On days I want nothing, it works as well. It does not look like makeup; it looks like you had a very good night. Even my Mom loves it.
Dior Forever Skin Perfect 24H Multi-Use Foundation Stick entered my cart out of pure necessity. When Dior discontinued Airflash, I nearly sobbed—a personal tragedy. A Dior makeup artist taught me to mix Dreamskin with the Forever Skin Glow Liquid Foundation to get that lit-from-within effect, and I still do it. Then I walked into Sephora, spotted the stick, and decided to try it on the spot. I love a stick format. I am a self-titled lazy beauty girl; it travels well, and I already know my shade. Not the same as Airflas, but a a very good evolution.

I went to a Sephora in Westchester to test out some new products, while grabbing a few last-minute additions in the check-out line. I often have to choose between products, so I rely on their staff for guidance. I had also just run out of moisturizer, so this trip needed to happen!
Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream is a tried-and-true that always finds its way back into my skincare routine. It preps my skin for makeup and gives me an almost effortless glow, while restoring hydration (which I desperately need). The refillable packaging is a nice touch while the product balances out the actives in the rest of my routine. When I was 21, I grabbed it for its packaging. At 28, I come back for the results!

Caudalie Vinopure Acne Serum. I first started using Caudalie when I was living in London, and it has crossed the pond with me back home. I can use it on my entire face or spot-treat, and it exceeds my expectations each time. The bottle also looks great on my shelf!
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Bronzer sits perfectly on top of their liquid bronzer, letting me add dimension that I know won’t fade. This is a hit-the-pan type of product that perfectly matches!
Rare Beauty delivers on both counts. The Brow Harmony Gel sets brows all day and has survived a full Pilates class, and a little goes a long way. The Volumizing Mascara has what I consider the perfect applicator; it covers every lash without the raccoon effect, and holds curl so well you look wide awake hours later.
Beauty of Joseon Rice Milk Toner is a new buy for me after seeing it absolutely inundated on my feed. I’ve used it twice so far, and both times my makeup has lasted longer than it has in years.
One Size Powder Melt Glass Setting Spray literally melts all my makeup together while locking it in place. I wear glasses half the time, and this is the only setting spray that doesn’t leave them covered in product. And the glass skin aspect is a nice touch.
Rhode Peptide Lip Treatment is a new winter staple, and the Strawberry Glaze is my current favorite. It actively keeps my lips from chapping and lasts throughout multiple cups of coffee.
Glow Recipe PDRN Toner Pads. I fully hopped on the PDRN train, and these pads elevate my nighttime routine. I place them on my upper cheeks while prepping my hair before bed, letting the serum soak in before the next step in my routine.
Gisou Honey Infused Hair Oil works overtime with their Hair Mask to keep humidity from affecting my hair. It smells incredible and helps lock in the style, without being overly oily.
Brittany’s Cart:
As a penny-pincher, I buy most of my bulk items like moisturizer, sunscreen, and cleansers at Costco, which means Sephora is where I pick myself up favorites that are too niche for big box stores and nice little treats!
The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% Daily Toner is a complete non-negotiable for me these days. I think everyone online has heard someone evangelize Glycolic Acid by this point, but it truly has done wonders for my skin texture. An ingredient that has thoroughly earned its spot on my counter!
Innisfree Super Volcanic Pore Detoxing Clay Mask, with Summer coming up, my skin is prone to getting a bit oily. I love a clay mask on the weekend to whip it back into shape and give me an excuse to lounge around with my eyes closed and a cold brew in hand.
The INKEY List Glycolic Acid Body Stick, yes, ANOTHER Glycolic Acid product, I was serious when I said this ingredient is the real deal! I’m excited to try a new format and hoping this will be just the thing I need to quash ingrown hairs.
The Ordinary Rice Lipids + Ectoin Microemulsion Moisturizer. Now for a true experiment! I love The Ordinary for its ingredients and value, but some of its formulations are too much for my skin outside the deepest winter months. I’m excited to try an ultra-lightweight formulation as things heat up for the year.
Viktor & Rolf Mini Flowerbomb Perfume Trio Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking. It may mean I’m basic, but I love the balance in the original Flowerbomb and have been wanting to try Tiger Lily and Peony for a while - so surely a mini-sampler couldn’t hurt?
Jamie’s Cart — with a little help from special guest Ariana Wahab
Jamie will tell you she only did the basics this round, but Ariana had other ideas. Consider this the section where the next generation earns its keep!
K18 Biomimetic Hairscience Gift Set is the kind of hair science that actually delivers. K18’s patented peptide technology reverses damage in four minutes, and the sale is the right moment to try it without full commitment.
REFY Brow Sculpt Shaping and Lifting Gel is new to Sephora and already earning its reputation. The three-in-one applicator lets you go from soft and fluffy to set and laminated, depending on the day. Brows have opinions now, and this accommodates them all.
REFY Skin Base Hydrating Gel Skin Tint is also new, and the kind of product Jamie would never have picked up on her own. A non-comedogenic gel formula that reads like skincare and wears like nothing. Clinically shown to boost hydration by 36 percent!
